Wow, I cannot imagine that someone would bomb a running event. As Jackie, Chloe and I watched the news last night, we couldn't believe it. I said I was surprised it hadn't happened at other events when Jackie reminded me there are bag checks and security personnel at football, basketball and I assume baseball games. But there's no security at a running, cycling, track, soccer or triathlon events ever, or at least that I know of. Jackie sent this article to me today from a writer from Sports Illustrated who took his 7 year old daughter to the Boston Marathon last year. It's a well written and moving article. See for yourself: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/more/news/20130415/steve-rushin-boston-daughter-special-day/
There are three victims from the bombing so far, one of which was an 8 year old boy at the finish line with his family. It's so sad and disgusting. Violence has no place at a sporting event. If you don't like something, this isn't the way to show it. I'm disgusted and crazy mad what this sets up for other events. In fact, Jackie and I both received an update on the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon set for a week from Sunday on April 28th. We ran its half in 2009. They updated their security efforts for their race in honor of the Oklahoma City Bombings that took place in 1995. My mother was at home and felt the bomb in Edmond which is 20 miles north of the downtown area where 169 were killed including 19 children and injured 680 people.
