Gearhead Cyclocross at Village Creek, Sunday, Nov. 4

Sunday, October 21, 2012

Chloe made this neat trailer after the Killough's Cyclocross Clinic last weekend.  We hope to have many BBC and Wynne folks enter the Gearhead Cyclocross race on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012.  Registration begins at 7:30, it's $20 to enter and $10 for a one day USA Cycling pass.  The day starts at 9 am, here's the Gearhead link: http://gearheadcyclehouse.com/CX/index.htm.  There is no pre-registration, fyi.

Cyclocross Clinic and Gearhead Cyclocross at Village Creek

I am so proud of this photo....the dismount obstacle.....

Here we all are, there's Stan, Jackie, Kyle, Kara and over there
is Chloe with her IPAD ready to film...I'll get her cyclocross
trailer on here soon (when I can find some wifi)

Lemme say that's one hill...Here's Kara caring
her bike (which is Cecelia's Mongoose).
Where is Cecelia you ask?  She decided this type
race isn't for her....so she had a huge Octoberfest
spread in her kitchen waiting on us afterwards.

Notice the way Kyle carries his bike up that
steep hill....

A giant shout out to Kyle and Cecelia Killough who hosted a fabulous cyclocross clinic at their blueberry farm east of Wynne last Saturday.  Kyle had a 1/2 mile loop set up (I'm guessing here) that had a dismount and get back on your bike, 3 logs or obstacles to jump over while on your bike then up a hill over planks while carrying your bike.  I tell you it was one workout and Kara and I can report we both have some kind of bruise on the inside of our right leg...must have been something about the dismount I'd say.

Gearhead is hosting a Cyclocross event at Village Creek Sunday, Nov. 4.  I bet it'll start at 9 am, it's not on racesonline so you register when you get there.  Jason, from Gearhead, has a guy from Jonesboro that has a World Master Cyclocross (I'm sure I'm not saying that right) title that will be setting up the course that is to be similar to European Cyclocross courses at Village Creek.

Thanks to Kyle for setting up a great challenging cyclocross course and to Cecelia for having brats, German potato salad, german chocolate cake as well as some German beer.  We all had a great time.  If you missed it just let them know and you can train out there I bet, until Nov. 4.

I cannot wait for Nov. 4.  I think it'll be a great, memorable event! -Keeli

Road Bike Ride this Saturday

Monday, October 1, 2012

Happy Anniversary Kyle and Cecelia!  I saw this in our church bulletin!  What a fun couple to hang with at bike rides and bike races.  And an early birthday shout out to John B. Shepherd on Saturday, Jackie's on Monday and Becca Jackson's on Tuesday...that's a ton of BBC birthdays and anniversaries I might say!

Ok, I am volunteering to do the Turkey Trot at the Wynne School's Health Fair on Saturday from 10-2.  A far as I've been told, this is walking/running around the track Saturday.  Who would like to volunteer to host Saturday at say, 2:30?  If there are no Wynne people, I can host a 2:30 ride from Birdeye.  I'd say go for a 25-30 mile ride and let's talk about the upcoming Gearhead Cyclocross event at Village Creek on Sunday, Nov. 4.  They don't take early entries, you enter the day of the event, just fyi.  I know that Adam Leslie, park interpreter, will be helping organize the cyclocross.  I cannot wait for the event, I hope it's great weather Nov. 4.

Since it's going to rain Saturday, I'm putting the brakes on a ride Saturday!  See ya'll next week! -Keeli

Big Dam Bridge 2012

Me, Martino, Kara, Jackie, Polly, Cecelia, Bob and Adam
Not pictured Kyle and the Blanton's

I thought this was super cool to see along the way, this
was at the beginning of the ride, he said he was going
to go to the Big Dam Bridge and watch everyone, how fun!
I believe that thang can seat 6

We were all cracking up at this guy in his banana
style cage around his recumbent bicycle...Adam
and I speculated that the cover on it was for
aerodynamics?  Who knows...

Well this is the evidence I have to show that the BBC was
trying a little peloton ...there's Martino, Jackie and Adam.
For the record we were averaging 16-17 mph on the first 20 miles
of the ride, I'd say at mile 15 I had the thighs cramping and
burning and was wondering if I'd make it to the first aid
station for a stretch....

The route this year took us over a smaller version of the Big Dam
Bridge first....I loved it...there's Adam and Jackie with
Martino up ahead....

Here's an Obama jersey with matching
Obama socks....loved it!

For evidence that the Blanton's were there I took this photo at the
2nd aid station at mile 20....Luckily, I caught  up with Lisa and we rode
on to the 40 mile aid station where I totally needed another stretch.
We caught up with Jackie and Cecelia and the 4 of us rolled in.
Martino, Kara and Bob and Polly were up ahead.
I probably should mention that this very important aid station was
out of pickles AND pickle juice.  For my cramping legs, I was
dying for some of that but was forced to take Gatorade instead.
The mile 10/40 aid station (it was an out and back route) ran out
of pickles when Cecelia got there but was passing out the juice!

The Big Dam Bridge just about 6 miles to
the finish line in North Little Rock and the last photo
I could make myself take as I was nervous with
the cramping in my legs that I wouldn't finish...I have to
confess that taking photos while on a bike,
clipped in was dangerous in some spots, I
even had fellow cyclists comment that it was
impressive I was taking photos while riding.
But if there aren't photos this blog would be
even more boring than it is, right?
We had a great showing from the BBC at yesterday's Big Dam Bridge bike ride!  We were missing usuals Dr. Beth and Stan Bradshaw, who were on call, but the Blanton's came as did Village Creek park interpreter Adam Leslie.  This was the first BDB for Adam and the Blanton's and they all fared well.  Everyone did the 52 mile bike ride and Kyle did the 100 again and posted a personal BEST time, taking 30 minutes off!  WOW!

A million thanks to Bob who used his fabulous pump to get everyone's tires in shape.  Jackie's pump had a leak in it and I was flat at 7:25 am when the thing started at 7:30.

Thankfully, Kara had a sitter hired and she took our 4 to
the discovery museum a few blocks from the hotel.  They all
had a great time!  August, Stella, Whit-a-roo and Coco.
Look at Chloe displaying this year's shirt...
At our post ride lunch at Dugan's, we all enjoyed talking about the bike ride and about Kyle's experience on the course.  I was so glad that other's in the BBC also forgot critical things: Cecelia texted me at 5:45 that she had no padded shorts, I loaned her my running shorts then Kara gave her an extra pair of Martin's shorts. Kara's parents Bob and Polly didn't have a water bottle packed, so Jackie and I took the Gatorade bottles and gave them 2 of our bottles.  I didn't pack a sports bra and realized that an underwire did just fine.  It's so nice that everyone had supplies for everyone.

Here's the times everyone's reported to me, these are riding times that don't have our 15 minute stops along the way, I am going on the honesty policy:

Kyle, 100 miles 5:33
Chuck 3:12
Adam 3:24
Kara and Martin, 54 miles, 3:25
Lisa 3:55
Keeli (map my ride) 52 miles, 3:51 BUT Lisa started 15 minutes before me and finished 5 minutes BEFORE me
Cecelia 3:54
Jackie

I hope we'll get to ride this weekend, I'll let ya'll know.  I'll add the other times when I get them.  Keeli :)

Bike Ride this Saturday 4:30, Birdeye

These are Lisa and I's Keen sandals that clip in...we love them!

It's about time I got the CORRECT photo of Cecelia's new
specialized, that Trek was Joy Shepherd's new one!
According to Cecelia, it's a fancy and very comfortable ride!

I'm hosting a 4:30 pm bike ride Saturday (It was 4 but Chloe's swimming party at Maggie's starts at 2).

I know the Smith's and Killough's are rolling out and a bunch of other people, you know who you are, will be at Ole Miss, Little Rock or Chicago watching football.

We'll most likely be taking the million dollar ride which is about 20 miles on Saturday, plan on social time afterwards, sitter at my house! -Keeli

Share the road, Birdeye

I got this email this morning and I love this youtube video about cyclists sharing the road with drivers, it's 5 minutes long and well worth it....:)

Last week, the USA Pro Challenge bike race passed within 20 feet of our Colorado headquarters. A few days later, our community is still buzzing from the historic event, and pro bike racing remains on our minds.
While safe roads matter to everyone on a bike, professional cyclists spend more time on them than almost anyone. These talented, world-class athletes may seem super-human at times, but they are human like any of us—vulnerable on the open road.
In our new video, Vulnerable on the Open Road, five professional U.S. cyclists reflect on their experiences with bicycle safety. The riders share their visions for better bicycling conditions and lessons for safer motorist-bicyclist interactions.

Even though these riders are the top 1% of bicyclists, their advice—slow down, be aware, don't blow through red lights, build more infrastructure, get more people riding—applies to anyone who likes to enjoy the simple pleasure of a bike ride.

Take a moment to listen to their experiences and, next time you ride (or drive), carry their advice out on the road with you.

Today's ride....

Sunday, August 19, 2012

Okay ya'll!  We had an OUTSTANDING mountain bike ride today!  Many thanks to Adam Leslie for posting it and there was a GREAT crowd out today....I'm still gettin used to David's clip in pedals and my new Keen sandals.  Many thanks to Kyle for waiting on Jackie and I and to Denny Hess for being patient and witnessing my clumping in front of the horses.  Denny's got a new leg of the trail that's in the works for everyone, it is nice but super close to a creek and drop off and is single file.  Kyle called this "very technical, single track".  Just so you know CHUCK, I didn't take ONE photo today!  :)  See ya'll soon, Kara and I are both out of the biking routine over the next 2 weekends!  Keeli :)
